Sky Blues slip to a disappointing defeat

Conor Chaplin made his long-awaited debut for Coventry City but the young striker couldn’t make it a dream start as the Sky Blues slipped to their second home defeat of the new campaign.

The 21-year-old striker stepped off the bench for his first appearance in a Sky Blues shirt minutes after Calvin Andrew had given the visitors the lead a minute into the second half after City had wasted a string of first half chances.

And Coventry’s lack of composure in front of goal continued when Jonson Clarke-Harris passed up the opportunity of an equaliser when he headed narrowly wide.

The lively Luke Thomas, who put three shots wide in the first 45, finally hit the side’s first on target of the afternoon in the 67th minute, denied by a decent save.

But the Derby loan man should have pulled City level five minutes later when he fired wide of the far post with just the keeper to beat, having been played in by a decent ball from Chaplin.

The Sky Blues were forced to soak up a bit of earl set-piece pressure from the Dale, who started the game the brighter of the two sides.

But Robins’s men soon found their rhythm, turning up the heat on the opposition with some excellent attacking play but, frustratingly, no end product.

Jack Grimmer enjoyed acres of space down the right where he sent in a string of crosses looking for Clarke-Harris’s head.

The big striker sent two wide of the far post, one from Grimmer’s boot and another from a deep Michael Doyle free-kick, while winger Thomas frustratingly put three shots wide of the target after getting into excellent positions.

Tony Andreu also dragged an effort wide – one of 11 shots in the opening 45.

Goalkeeper Lee Burge, meanwhile, was called upon twice early on, his best save denying Callum Camps.

But Keith Hill’s men started the second half the way they began the first and scored from a 46th minute corner.

City failed to clear their lines and Andrew pounced to give the visitors the lead.

Gaining momentum, Dale then had one disallowed for off-side just after Chaplin was sent on to make his debut in the 54th minute.

But City should really have been level just after the hour when Clarke-Harris got on the end of another Grimmer cross but sent it wide of the near post.

Thomas hit one of only two shots on target all game from 16 attempts which told the story of the game as City slipped to their second home defeat of the campaign.
