Building will house up to 90 students near to the Canal Basin
A seven-floor student accommodation block will be built in Radford after planning permission was granted by Coventry City Council.
The building, which will house 90 students, is to be developed in St Columbas Close, near to the Canal Basin, and will see the existing buildings between numbers five and 23 demolished.
The site is described as a “semi-derelict industrial unit” and sits near to Wickes by Coventry Ring Road. It is an area given additional planning protection due to its position in the Canal Conservation Area.
Council planning officials have approved the application, which has been submitted by CNM Capital.
As a condition of approval, the developers must contribute more than £7,000 to the NHS “to provide additional health care services to meet patient demand”.
According to the documents filed with the council: “The application proposes to demolish the industrial unit and the small student flat complex and replace it with high quality student accommodation with a mixture of studios and ‘twodios’.
“The building will be a mixture of six and seven levels which will include use of the lower ground level and the incorporation of mezzanines in the roof space.
“There will be 85 self-contained units which will include five double ‘twodio’ units to give a total of 90 student bed spaces.”
The development will be called “The Residence” and will be managed by a property management team.
Six letters of objection were received by the council in response to the plans.
There's no such thing as "conservation area" in Coventry, it's a contradiction in terms.
