Budget shop to stay in Nuneaton as town centre store gets renovation

Image

Nuneaton is set to keep a budget shop amid uncertainty surrounding the store’s future.

The former 99p Stores shop in Queens Road, which has now been converted into a Poundland, will be staying open, it has been confirmed.

Eyebrows had been raised about the future of the now Poundland branch in Queens Road as shoppers noticed that the stock had been diminishing in recent weeks, with some shelves being almost empty.

Many feared that the discount trader would follow in the footsteps of TJ Hughes and Woolworths which both, at one stage, occupied the large store but then left.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, which owns the building, began discussions to try and stop the shutters being pulled down on the prominent store.

The store will not be closing and is undergoing a refit and stocking clothes, with a Pep & Co shop within the existing store.

Council leader Cllr Dennis Harvey said they were pleased to have kept the name in the town.

“99p stores are closing all over the country as part of the company’s national rationalisation programme,” he said.

“I am glad that we have been able to prevent that happening here in Nuneaton , it’s a positive reflection on the town and the strong partnership between the council and retailers.”

Alarm bells initially sounded about the store’s future when it was first announced that Poundland was taking over the 99p brand.

At one point, the town centre already had two Poundland stores; one in Abbey Street and one at the former M&S building in Market Place.

The Abbey Street branch was eventually closed but the former M&S store and 99p Stores have continued to trade ever since.

Now the Queens Road-based store looks set to be given a new lease of life.

Could Coventry's only department store close?

Debenhams have announced this morning that they plan to put 10 stores under review, and close 11 warehouses, including a major distribution centre employing 220 people.

The chain is possibly the most popular department store for Coventry and Warwickshire, with five stores in the region.

Coventry is the biggest branch, but it also has stores in Leamington, Nuneaton, Stratford and one of their newest branches in Rugby.

There has been no confirmation which stores are set to go under review.

It would not surprise me if Coventry was one with Primark in the city.

Marks and Spencer to close six stores

Marks and Spencer has named six stores which will close as part of chief executive Steve Rowe's plans to improve the business.

The company said 380 staff would be affected but they would be guaranteed redeployment at a nearby store.

M&S will also open 36 new stores over the next six months, creating more than 1,400 jobs.

Mr Rowe explained the six closures by saying that M&S was adapting to its customers' changing shopping habits.

"We are committed to adapting our business so that we stay in tune with our customers," he said.

The stores earmarked for closure are in Portsmouth, Slough, Warrington, and Wokingham, along with Simply Food stores in Monks Cross near York and Worksop.

In November, M&S said that following a "forensic review" of its store estate it was embarking on a five-year programme of store closures and openings.

The plans involve opening 200 new food-only stores, while selling clothing and homeware from 60 fewer stores.

Mr Rowe said on Thursday: "We will open new stores, some will reduce in size, some will move, some will close and others will convert to food-only."

Richard Hyman, a leading retail analyst, said there would be many more store closures to come on the UK High Street, as retailers were getting diminishing returns from their conventional shops.

Not exactly the 'dozens' of store closures which were threatened earlier.

I am surprised they all are not closing their stores sneaking GM food into their foods like Tesco and other stores their clothing is cheaply made no quality any more nor style all made in India their sizes are way out more in fitting with the size of 3rd world country people which saves them on materials. Their cafe food is horrible big thick bones in their fish which would choke a child easy as it did me in front of a staff member and not defrosted properly she refunded both meals also you have to wait ages for the food to arrive for the price they charge its discusting . They are conning us with their good name they use to have.

I was told by an employee in the shop they have had to reduce their clothes because of customers advice where I would like to know.

Is shopping in Coventry city centre dying? That's the question as more shops close

Image

Coventry has a dwindling number of high street chains, according to a comprehensive survey of the city’s shops.

In January 2016, Coventry had 257 chain shops, but by December it had 251.

Among the more famous casualties last year was BHS, which shut its Coventry outlet in Upper Precinct after going out of business.

Black’s, the outdoor clothing and equipment retailer in the Cathedral Lanes shopping centre, also closed last year. It was replaced with a charity shop.

More recently a branch of Miss Selfridge in the West Orchards Shopping Centre closed its doors.

The popular women’s clothing store shut up shop in mid-March.

BHS is not the first department store to shut up shop in the city centre in recent years.

The Co-op’s department store and grocery shop in Corporation Street closed in 2015. Bosses blamed a difficult retail climate and the rise of internet shopping.

For the analysis - produced by The Local Data Company on behalf of accountancy firm PwC - only multiple retailers were analysed, meaning chains with more than five shops across the country.

The figures did not give a breakdown on which stores opened and closed in Coventry but revealed there were 13 openings and 19 closures.

Looking at the national picture the PwC analysis revealed that generally fashion chains and banks are being replaced by takeaways and gyms as the British high street changes to reflect consumer spending habits.

It concluded the face of the high street was rebalancing from shopping to leisure, with health clubs, vaping shops and jewellers seeing the fastest growth in bricks-and-mortar stores.

However, clothes shops, high street lenders and insurances agencies have faded from prime sites, as banking and clothes shopping moves online.

Mike Jervis, retail specialist at PwC, said: “The insatiable appetite for fast food and coffee shops fills the void left by banks, mobile phone and clothing shops.

“Fashion is migrating to online at a faster rate than ever, leaving closures in its wake.”

Is shopping in Coventry city centre dying?
Anyone needing to ask that question is blind!

These days when I go into the centre there are rarely more than a handful of people around: a far cry from my childhood and teen years when the place would be heaving, no matter what time or day of the week. (Thursday excepted as it was half day closing!)

Mind you, the shops often don't help themselves. Last week I noted that at 11:00 AM, many shops were only just opening up!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

With all the building of University accomodation for students I thought the city would be full of shoppers when they continue to say they will bring prosperity to our city buying and using the facilities of bars and shops when in truth they use their own with in the university.

Just For Pets to go into administration

Image

A pet shop chain with 25 stores across England will go into administration, bosses have announced.

Just for Pets, which has branches in Coventry and Warwickshire, has been making a loss, its owners Wynnstay said in a statement.

Changes in buying behaviour, competition and greater cost pressures were blamed for the company's demise.

"This has been an extremely difficult decision to make," said group chief executive Ken Greetham.

"We will be working closely with advisers to ensure that Just for Pets employees, customers, suppliers and Wynnstay shareholders are best served."
