'Mickey Mouse jobs' not answer to Coventry's economy

Coventry council's Labour leader says the local economy's future is not in "Mickey Mouse jobs stacking shelves".

Research and development is vital in retaining skills in the city, Labour group leader John Mutton said.

Gary Ridley, Coventry North West Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate, said his party wants to invest in education.

Meanwhile Brian Patton, Coventry South Liberal Democrat candidate, decried the loss of city car factories.

The three men were asked what should be done to keep skills in the city during a radio interview on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.

'Gone elsewhere'

Mr Mutton said: "We have been successful in retaining the research and development of Jaguar. I think that's the way to create jobs.

"We don't want Mickey Mouse jobs stacking shelves and that's not being detrimental to people that do that in supermarkets."

Mr Ridley said: "We (the Conservatives) actually want to create another 10,000 university places.

"We want to create more technical academies across the UK."

Mr Patton, for the Lib Dems, said: "Car factories [in Coventry] have been allowed to go.

"There's more cars being built in the world today than there ever has been. But they've gone elsewhere. That's got to stop."
