Classic car enthusiasts came from all over Coventry and Warwickshire yesterday to meet a very special guest and show off their cars.

Mike Brewer, star of hit TV show Wheeler Dealers, joined the people of Coventry at the transport museum.

Displayed in front of the museum were many different types of cars, ranging from a brand new ‘66 plate BMW, to a 1967 Trabant towing a purpose made caravan.

Mike, who presents the world famous show Wheeler Dealers, said it was fantastic to be in a city where most of the cars on show were made.

He said: “It is fantastic to be here in Coventry . So many people have turned up with their cars - I’ve never seen so many cars squeezed on to such a small space.

“What’s great about this city is the history it holds.

“Most of these cars in front of me will either have been made in this city, or have parts in them that were made here.

“Coventry holds so much for the car industry, just behind the walls of the museum you can see the fastest car in the world - now there aren’t many places that can show you that.”

More than 50 cars were on display, including Fords, Audis, and a Rolls Royce.

But there was one car in particular which caught Mike’s eye.

Ivor Burgess and his family from Hinckley had brought along their rare 1960s Trabant, which they even use to pop to the shops in.

Mike said: “This car is fantastic. It does 400 miles in a week towing a caravan, and the guy even carries a piston round with him incase that goes on it.

“It’s fantastic that they can restore such an old and wonderful car to use it once again.”

Ivor, who owns the Trabant with wife Elizabeth and son Gabe, said they now use it as their family car.

He said: “We’ve had it for just over two years now, and the caravan we have had for around seven months.

“We go to a car show every week, but now we even pop to the shops in it, and by the time we have come back out, we have a crowd of people around the car.”

Mike added: “The important thing to me is remembering that the owner and their story behind the car is what makes it classic.

“And Coventry’s transport museum is an amazing place to see all the history of classic cars in one place.”

Snap! Without his mate he's nothing. I'm also reliably informed that if you correct one of his many gaffes on social media he rapidly blocks you. He still thinks that the Range Rover was built at Longbridge!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
