The incident happened shortly before 9am as commuters made their way to work in the busy Leamington town centre.

Warwickshire Police have confirmed the incident was a robbery, but officers do not yet know exactly what has been taken.

At least four men are believed to have taken part in the raid before escaping in a silver Vauxhall Astra.

One eye witness also told the Telegraph she saw cassettes of cash being taken from the scene.

Another witness said: "Two people drove straight into the bank.

"both jumped out with bandannas and scarves around them.

"30 secs later they both ran out with two to three containers and jumped into another that was car waiting."

A grey Kia was used to smash through the front window of the building society’s upper Parade branch.

Warwickshire Police said nobody had been arrested and it is not yet known if anyone has been injured.

A statement from Warwickshire Police said: "Police were called just after 8.30am to reports of a robbery at the Coventry Building Society on the Parade in Leamington Spa.

"It is thought four men were involved in the incident after a silver Kia was used to drive into the property's shutters.

"The men then made off in what is believed to be a silver Vauxhall Astra which was later abandoned on Morrell Street.

"It is thought the offenders then got into a dark grey saloon- type vehicle.

"Officers arrived at the scene within three minutes and are still there making enquiries.

"The top of Parade to Hamilton Terrace, northbound, has been closed.

"The investigation is in its early stages and we are still trying to establish exactly what has been taken."

Kevin Newey, who photographed the damage, said the driver of the vehicle was attempting to reverse the car out of the building society window when he arrived.

He added: “Police now on the scene. Not got a clue how a car could end up there.

“The car is attempting to reverse out on my picture. Lots of people standing around taking pics.”
