Travellers set up camp on Spencer Park in Earlsdon

Travellers have moved onto land at the popular Spencer Park, in Earlsdon.



About 15 caravans have been spotted on the land which is bordered by the Central Six retail park and Spencer Avenue.

The Earlsdon site is the latest in a string of illegal campsites set up by travellers across the city in recent weeks.

Travellers were also spotted on land opposite Cardinal Newman School, on Bennetts Road South, in Keresley, last night.

Other areas which have recently played host to travellers include Luscombe Road, in Henley Green; Sowe Common, Shilton Lane; Papenham Green, Canley; Kebull Green, in Tile Hill South; Ponderosa in Tile Hill and Wyken Croft.

Coventry City Council has acted quickly to serve eviction notices to travellers when they have set up camp in other areas of the city in the past.

Nobody was available at the council to respond to enquiries about whether the authority was aware of the travellers or had taken any action to move them on.

Council will "deal robustly" with illegal traveller camps in Coventry

Illegal traveller camps in Coventry will be dealt with "robustly" the city council has insisted.

Deputy leader Coun Phil Townshend was speaking after a string of illegal traveller camps appeared in the city in recent weeks.

Recently, about 15 caravans set up a camp site at Spencer Park, in Earlsdon.

Prior to that, travellers were spotted on land opposite Cardinal Newman School, on Bennetts Road South, in Keresley.

That followed a string of encampments in other areas including Luscombe Road, in Henley Green; Sowe Common, Shilton Lane; Papenham Green, Canley; Kebull Green, in Tile Hill South; Ponderosa in Tile Hill and Wyken Croft.

Coun Townshend told a full council meeting that the authority had been working closely with partners such as West Midlands Police to deal with the problem as efficiently as possible.

He said: “We have seen a number of problems with illegal traveller encampments across the city. There is a cost, distress to communities and disturbance and clear up problems as a result.

“That is disappointing because the city council does operate a traveller site at Ryton.”

He added: “Part of the preventative action includes constructing earth mounds. That can cause concerns, but it is preferable to the alternative.

“The council will continue to deal with these encampments robustly. It will never be quick enough for some people, we understand that.

“But we are doing our best with officers and partner organisations.”

Nigel Clews, assistant director at the council, is responsible for dealing with traveller camps and said the council could look at new ways of tackling the problem.

In an email to councillors, he said: “After a long spell when there was few encampments in the city, last year saw an unprecedented increase, and this year whilst at a lower level, activity is still high by comparison.

“It is clear from colleagues elsewhere that across the Midlands there is increased traveller activity and a different strategy may need to be considered.”

He also clarified that evicting travellers costs the council hundreds of pounds each time.

Last year Coun Townshend said he wanted caravans seized and sold to pay for the cost of evicting the travellers.

The move was branded as a "draconian" abuse of power by traveller groups, and never got off the ground.

And why not? These travellers are extracting the urine. It is wrong that law abiding citizens are paying for this.

Travellers have moved onto Coventry’s War Memorial Park.

Around five caravans have moved onto the park on Kenilworth Road over the weekend.

There are also reports travellers have made their way onto the King Henry VIII’s playing fields on the A45 near Tollbar End.

A spokesman from Coventry City Council confirmed travellers have moved onto the park. He said: “It looks like they moved onto there over the weekend.

“We’ve had reports of a group of travellers on War Memorial Park.

“We’ve got officers going out to assess the situation.”

I refer to my previous post. If these people knew they'd have their property confiscated to pay for any court costs and for cleaning up after them we wouldn't have a problem. It'd only take one case and word would spread like wildfire and we'd have no more problems within our city boundaries. Sadly, our inept muppet Councillors would rather play games of petty politics and spend their time looking for their next tax payer paid jolly!

Travellers moved on from Coventry War Memorial Park by police

Travellers who moved onto Coventry’s War Memorial Park have now left the site.

Around five caravans have moved onto the park on Kenilworth Road over the weekend.

Today a spokesman from Coventry City Council said: “The travellers moved off the park at 7.30pm last night after police used their powers to move them on.”

There are also reports travellers have made their way onto the King Henry VIII’s playing fields on the A45 near Tollbar End and that there are travellers setting up camp on Henley Road between Walsgrave and Bell Green.

The Kenilworth Horse Fair, popular with the travelling community, will be held on Sunday July 26.

I wonder just how much mess they left for us to clear up and what the police cost was. It's wrong that tax payers foot the bill. If I commit a crime I pay for it if I'm caught, why not these 'travellers'?
