Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker has dominated the 2010 Academy Awards.

The intense war drama, about an EOD team defusing bombs during the Iraq war, has scooped six trophies at the prestigious Hollywood event. The film took home the coveted 'Best Picture' and 'Director' Oscars, along with awards for Mark Boal's 'Original Sceenplay', 'Editing', 'Sound Editing' and 'Sound Mixing'.

Bigelow made history by becoming the first female filmmaker to win the directing prize. "There's no way to describe it, it's the moment of a lifetime," she said after collecting the Oscar from Barbra Streisand.

Jeff Bridges won his first Academy Award, taking home the 'Best Actor' gong for his role as a washed-up country musician in Crazy Heart. The 60-year-old looked up and thanked his late parents, Lloyd and Dorothy Bridges, on winning the trophy.

"Thank you Mum and Dad for turning me on to a such a groovy profession," he said.

Sandra Bullock triumphed in the 'Best Actress' category over Brit stars Helen Mirren and Carey Mulligan, as well as Meryl Streep and Gabourey Sidibe. Her role as a conservative housewife who adopts a homeless black teenager in The Blind Side won her her first Oscar.

The supporting acting prizes went to Inglourious Basterds' Christoph Waltz and Precious's Mo'Nique.

Elsewhere, Up netted a fifth Oscar for Pixar in the 'Best Animated Feature' category and Avatar landed three technical awards ('Art Direction', 'Cinematography' and 'Visual Effects').

Editor's note: No sci-fi movie has ever won a major Academy Award. Star Trek, which was arguably the best sci-fi movie of last year, wasn't even nominated for any!
