Coventry City Council’s planning committee is set to rubber stamp plans for the company to build a new shop on vacant land at the Coventry Airport Retail Park, near Tollbar Island.

Council officers have recommended the committee approves plans for the supermarket which will be 54-metres long and 22.5-metres wide.

Aldi say the new supermarket would create about 40 jobs and would be the retailer’s fourth store in Coventry - with all three current sites in the north of the city.

The retail park is currently home to Currys/PC World, Smyths Toys, Dunelm, Carpetright and Halfords. B&M Bargains is also due to open at the site in November.

A total of nine objections have been received to the plans citing concerns over noise, traffic, pollution and the number of retailers in the area.

Labour Coun John Mutton, Binley and Willenhall, will speak at the planning committee meeting where the application will be considered on Thursday, June 11.

He will speak in favour of the plans on the basis that they will create jobs in his ward, an area which experiences high unemployment.

The report by planning officers shows a total of 77 trees will be lost due to the development, but the developers say new shrubbery will be planted.

Officers have also recommended a lengthy list of conditions are attached should planning permission be granted, including a clause that development must begin no later than three years from the date of permission.

If given the go-ahead, the new Aldi store is expected to take around 40 weeks to build.

Plans approved to build a new Aldi at Coventry's Airport Retail Park

Plans to build a budget supermarket near Coventry Airport have been given the go ahead by council planners – creating 40 new jobs.

Coventry City Council’s planning committee this afternoon approved an application to erect an Aldi supermarket at the Airport Retail Park, near Tollbar Island, with conditions.

Plans to build the supermarket were welcomed by locals.

Eleven people contacted the council to show their support during consultation.

A further 277 people were supportive of the scheme in an enquiry conducted by the fast-growing retailers.

People broadly praised the plans, saying the new supermarket would reduce the need to travel to shop and give them more choice.

The new supermarket is expected to create around 40 new jobs when it opens.

And around 50 jobs are expected to be created during the building process.

The application received no objections from Highways England, although recommendations have been made to improve access from London Road to the supermarket’s service yard.

Binley and Willenhall councillor John Mutton (Lab) told the meeting: “I see this as a win-win situation. The area lacks badly in facilities.

“The supermarket will hopefully create 40 jobs mainly for local people.”

Aldi doesn't "create" jobs, it just poaches them from other retailers and destroys some jobs altogether.

One man's price cut is another man's job loss.

It's a shame that the muppets on the council don't actually realise this.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
