Fifty Shades of Grey has shattered box office records in the UK.

The big-screen adaptation of EL James's best-selling erotic novel earned £13.5 million to take home top spot in the UK ahead of Big Hero 6 and the Shaun the Sheep Movie.

Fifty Shades is the UK and Ireland's biggest ever 18 certificate and non-franchise/sequel opening, as well as the largest February and Valentine's Day debut. The film also has the biggest opening weekend bow of 2015 so far.

Sam Taylor-Johnson's movie, which stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, has so far grossed more than $260 million at the worldwide box office and is the number one movie in the US.

Elsewhere in the week's UK chart, the only other new release to make a dent in the top ten is Peppa Pig: The Golden Boots. The family film earned £687,417 on its debut weekend on release.
