Plans to demolish a Nuneaton car rental centre and replace it with a petrol station should be given the go ahead.

That is according to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council planning officers who have recommended plans submitted by Asda to build a petrol station for approval.

Asda Stores Ltd has submitted an application to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council to knock down the vehicle hire base on Newtown Road, which is close to the entrance to its food store.

The firm is seeking permission to demolish the kiosk and canopy which currently form the former car hire company in order to build a brand new petrol filling station with six unmanned pumps.

The application has been recommended for approval, despite objections being received from residents.

One of the main issues raised is the increase in traffic - with residents stating that the busy road would be made even worse, especially at peak times, and that when there was a petrol station there 20 years ago there was not as many people using the road.

Other concerns include that the site is in an air quality zone and will increase pollution, the impact on the environment if any petrol ran off-site into the River Anker and that there are already existing stations in Nuneaton.

Other consultees have not objected subject to certain conditions being met.

These include Warwickshire County Council's highways department who are not objecting subject to conditions including that construction traffic does not access the site from Newtown Road, there is construction of a turning and parking area for the construction traffic, a dropped kerb is constructed and there is no glare from lighting on the public highway.

Warwickshire County Council's drainage department and the environment agency have also not objected subject to certain drainage conditions being met.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council's parks and countryside team also proposed conditions including a lighting survey takes place to illustrate there will be no additional light spill onto the River Anker and that landscape details must be approved prior to commencement.

The borough council's planning policy department has submitted its support for the plans provided it is demonstrated that it will not impact on highway safety.

The application will be discussed at the borough council's next planning meeting on Tuesday, April 1 at Nuneaton Town Hall.
