Gunshots were fired at a car in a quiet residential street in Coventry.

Police were called to Sycamore Road in Aldermans Green at about 11.30pm on Sunday.

Residents living nearby reported hearing a series of loud bangs – like fireworks – before the police swooped.

Officers found a black VW car with both the driver and passenger side windows shot out.

A few hours later a car that police believe is linked to the shooting was discovered in the University Hospital car park at Walsgrave.

Officers shut down both locations so forensic teams could search the area.

No-one was seriously hurt in the incident, but a 32-year-old man was treated for superficial injuries at University Hospital.

Residents living nearby said they clearly heard the car windows being shot out.

Eleanor Woods, who lives a few metres away from where the shooting took place, said the area was usually fairly quiet.

“We have one or two moments,” she said. “But I’ve always felt safe here.

“It was about 11pm at night. I heard two loud gunshots.

“I looked out of my window and saw two young lads walking away from the car.

“I didn’t actually see what they had done at that stage, because of the angle of my window.

“There have been one or two incidents – people have been parking their cars on the street and it’s looked a bit dodgy like something is going on.

“But it is a fairly quiet area. This is obviously really unusual.”

The area where the shooting took place was immediately cordoned off and yesterday officers were searching the area.

A part of the hospital car park was shut off too, but that cordon was lifted yesterday. Hospital services were not affected.

One resident, who declined to be named, said the area was “getting deadly”.

“It’s just people being stupid,” he said. “It’s not organised or anything, but it’s getting worse.”

Coventry Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
