Coventry fire service appliances

Postby rebbonk » Fri Dec 25, 2009 4:49 am

Coventry once had yellow fire engines, as well as a fluorescent pink Simon Snorkel platform unit.

Does anyone know of any pictures?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Incidentally, "City of Coventry" fire engines were powered by a Rolls-Royce 8-cylinder in-line petrol engine and displayed a prominent "RR" badge on the radiator.

Corgi made a 1/50th scale model of one up until recently but it is hard to find now.

Here is the Corgi model:

I'm not conviced that particular fire engine ever carried that colour so it may have been just a marketing gimmick by Corgi?

This is a 1/76th (model railway) scale of a "Green Goddess" which carried City of Coventry yellow for a very short period:

This is an interesting thread, as I was looking at a Rolls Royce B80 engine from a Dennis Pax fire appliance just the other day. It was being used, powered by LPG, to power a massive generator at a sawmill. It was a straight eight with the usual RR overhead inlet, side exhaust valve layout (like the contemporary Rover cars). In spite of its size, the sawmill owner said it was quite economical, and estimated the output to be only about 120bhp, delivered at around 1200 rpm!
The B80 and 81 were I think 5.6 and 6 litre capacity, and were used in many military vehicles, like the Alvis Saracen, as well as in the FML series of Admiralty Launch, made, I think , by Thornycroft, Saunders Roe and Brook Marine.

I have around fifty photographs on slide and transferred to my computer taken in the 60's and 70's . All the fleet in City of Coventry Fire Brigade Yellow, including the 'mini squirt' 1st to arrive at the Gosford street fire! I have the report on the development of the colour by Lanchester College and quite a few shots of equipment and activities. My dad was brigade photographer at the time If you're interested contact me at roypodoman@aol.com.
