Residents have successfully campaigned against plans for a 24-hour booze licence at a Coventry petrol station.

Stoke Park Service Station in Binley Road applied to Coventry City Council to sell alcohol round-the-clock from its convenience store.

But councillors rejected the bid yesterday and instead granted a licence to sell alcohol from 5am to 11pm.

Neighbouring residents objected to the plan, fearing the 24-hour licence could lead to a rise in crime and an increase in noise and anti-social behaviour.

Binley Road resident John Lageu wrote to the council saying: “We already suffer from noisy motorists filling up with petrol at all hours of the night.

“I think 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year alcohol sales is totally unacceptable.”

The service station, which has not previously stocked alcohol, was granted a licence to sell alcohol between 5am and 11pm by Coventry’s planning and licensing committee at the Council House yesterday.

After the meeting Mr Lageu said: “I’m not sure a garage should be selling alcohol.

“There seems to be some conflict in terms of drink driving. But I’m pleased it won’t be selling alcohol all night.

“I couldn’t see any justification for that.”
