Controversial multi-million pound plans for a massive Coventry University halls of residence at Belgrade Plaza have collapsed.

The university has pulled out of long-held plans for the new accommodation block for 500 students at the square around the Belgrade Theatre.

Planning permission was granted two years ago for the six-storey scheme, which was heralded by councillors as a major part of the city centre’s regeneration.

It got the go-ahead despite uproar from elderly residents living opposite in Bond’s Court and in nearby Bond’s Hospital - part of a conservation area.

A spokesman for developers Oakmoor Deeley said it was now in talks with another party – a private firm – to provide homes for students on the site.

But he conceded any future student building will now not be ready in time for the previously scheduled opening of Autumn this year.
