Three piece suite and beds among 'disgusting' fly-tipping in Coventry

Image

Residents in Whoberley are angry at a "disgusting" fly-tipping incident in the area, with a councillor branding it a "blight on the local community".

The council has been informed after the tipper dumped what looks to be the entire contents of someone's flat on Greendale Road, including a three piece suite, cabinets and two beds.

The pile was seen by locals on Tuesday (February 15) and posted online.

Resident Jo Curran captured the image and shared it on social media.

She told CoventryLive: "It’s disgusting. But unfortunately it seems to happen quite regularly in this street. It’s always at the top of the road by the garages where rubbish is dumped.

"It's not fair on the residents like myself who have to look at this."

But sadly for people living in the area this incident is not an isolated case.

Jo explained: "It’s been happening regularly. I’ve reported fly-tipping maybe 10 times in the last one to two years. I am not sure why it’s a hotspot. Maybe due to the amount of flats here, possible rental properties? Who knows?"

Labour Cllr Bally Singh for the Whoberley ward blasted the culprit's selfishness.

Cllr Singh said: "The fly-tipping reported on Greendale Road is just so sad to see and is a blight on the local community.

"Many of the fly-tipped items, including household furniture, could have gone to those more needy, but whoever did this seems to have no care for their fellow citizens or of their own wider responsibilities.

"I have reported to authorities and I hope the culprits can be identified."

A Coventry City Council spokesman said: “Coventry City Council can confirm that we are aware of the fly-tipping on Greendale Road. Officers are currently investigating the issue and are looking to work with local residents and the landowner to ascertain who is responsible for leaving it there.

Rats and raw meat have left Coventry neighbourhood in 'horrendous' state

Image

Raw meat flung onto the street and rats chewing through car wires are just some of the issues facing a Coventry neighbourhood. Reports of fly tipping and piles of rubbish have also left the streets of Foleshill in a mess.

Zia Khan, a Webster Street resident who is also running as an independent candidate for Foleshill in the upcoming elections said the area has become "horrendous". He added that dead rats on the streets are becoming a daily occurrence.

The situation has escalated to such an extent that Coventry City Council delivered three large skips to the area on Friday (April 1) for residents to use. They also told CoventryLive they are taking a number of steps to get the situation under control.

"It is horrendous," Mr Khan told CoventryLive. "Missed bin [collections] are adding to the problems we have already".

Mr Khan said he saw three different rats on various roads in Foleshill last week, with hotspots in the roads running off Foleshill road. "Everywhere we go we're seeing black bags, if you're in a wheelchair or a buggy you can't get past it, we're seeing that on a daily basis."

Mr Khan said the rats have even caused damage to local cars and properties: "A resident who brought a new car, rats from the rubbish got under the wiring and she had to get it fixed."

Mr Khan said the resident had contacted the council.

He said there has also been an ongoing issue with a local business throwing raw meat out onto the street. "It has been going on for a year, [they throw] old meat they haven't sold."

CoventryLive put these concerns to Coventry City Council. A council spokesperson said: "We have received reports from residents about issues with rubbish and rats in the Foleshill area and we have taken a number of steps to get this matter resolved.

“With the re-introduction of blue-lidded recycling collections, coupled with the recent return of household waste collections, we hope that residents will find it easier to manage their waste, reducing the build-up of black bags. We have delivered three skips on Friday morning so that residents can participate in a number of community-led clear ups.

“Our Pest Control team are already working in this area to tackle the rat population, and our Food Safety Team and Environmental Health Team will be investigating the reports of raw meat disposed of in the street. Flytipping any waste is illegal and we take reports very seriously."

Fury as 'out-of-control kids' plague Coventry neighbourhood with rubbish

Image

Angry residents have hit out at uncontrollable kids and others after fly-tipped rubbish was dumped in a Coventry neighbourhood. Sofas, clothes hangers and a Christmas tree are among the items that have been left strewn across the pavement in Riley Square, Bell Green.

According to local resident Mel Robertson, it is the latest of several such incidents in recent months. Speaking to CoventryLive, she said: “Riley Square is a hotspot for people dumping along with the green space near the River Sowe going towards Bell Green.

“I live near here so I see and notice what is going on and if it was up to me these people would be fined. I reported two local families for dumping, they have not done it since so these deterrents work. Coventry City Council offers a very reasonably priced bulk collection so I feel there is no excuse to dump.”

Someone who shops in the neighbourhood previously told CoventryLive : “I pop into Farmfoods for a few bits every few weeks and it is not the first time I have seen rubbish in the car park like this. Something needs to be done to get it sorted before people stop coming here to shop.”

Mel added that the fly-tipping 'really annoys' her and shows the lack of respect people have for their own neighbourhoods. “It really annoys me knowing I live in an area that people no longer respect,” she said.

She added: “I live near Moat House, in the newer properties. It was lovely when I first moved in but I have seen it decline. People no longer seem concerned about what is happening outside their own front door.”

Mel went on to say that the area had a 'lovely green space' in the Grove with benches for families to enjoy which has now been 'smashed up', with old toys also left abandoned on the pavements. She said: “Smashed up by 'children' - the parents must be aware of what their children are doing but choose not to do anything. Dumped toys are also from people who live here, the broken slab, another local teenager - it has been like it for months.”

Innovative Retail Development have been approached for comment.

I know something about this. If it's a Christmas Tree then it's someone being forcibly rehomed by Citizen. I've seen it in Spon End.

Nightmare neighbourhood renamed 'Hell Green' amid fly-tipping, smashed windows and dog muck plague

Image

Families living on Riley Square, Bell Green say the area, nicknamed 'Hell Green', has been overrun by youngsters who terrorise locals. One mum said her partner asked one youngster to clean up their litter, only to be rudely told: 'I’ll do it if you pay me!'

CoventryLive previously reported that residents were fed-up with feral schoolchildren dumping unwanted and broken toys in the Coventry neighbourhood. Shocking pictures show smashed toys and Christmas decorations strewn on paths, canals and in alleyways.

Now residents are sharing their anger as rubbish continues to pile up in several streets. Barbara Nacham, 36, has lived in the area for five years and regularly tries to keep it clean, but says it's an uphill battle.

"This is a massive problem in our neighbourhood and it’s something our neighbours talk about," she said. "I saw and spoke to them yesterday. It seems like a never-ending story.

"Whether it be big items or just small things like crisp packets. We used to take turns cleaning the area but the next day it would always be covered in rubbish. We saw children throwing rubbish on the ground and we tried to speak to them.

"Once one of them brought their dad who shouted at us, it scared us. They're rude, too. We tidied up in the morning, half an hour later they threw something on the ground.

"When my partner asked them to clean it up, they said ‘if you pay me, I'll clean it up’. The play area is mainly kids, I don’t know if it's lack of education but there are no bins there.

"We've been reporting it to the local council. The council come and pick up the rubbish every day but how does that teach the kids."

Barbara added: "You have to pay £18 to get bulky items collected, for some people that is a lot of money. There’s one sofa that’s been here for at least two months.

"There are people going shopping, who bring the shopping home in a trolley but then dump the trolley in the river. I saw people coming back from Farmfoods with their shopping in the trolley and they wouldn’t bother to take their trolley back to the store, they’d just throw it in the river.

“They're doing it whenever they are on the play area. We are a small community. What we used to have in Poland were classes in school about how you’re supposed to keep your area clean, the kids used to pick up the garbage.

"It is a plague, it is sometimes even scary. I have a toddler who’s one and he keeps picking glass up from the ground. I have to watch the ground.

"There are people there drinking beer and throwing stuff on the ground. You're scared to even say something. Like when the kid brought his dad."

That's true all over Coventry, it's nothing peculiar to Bell Green. :fuming:
