Cllr O’Boyle said ... he is sure people will be “impressed” - describing them as “a high end retailer”.

We will see, but O'Boyle has not impressed me to date.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Former BHS store in Coventry taken over by Sports Direct owner

The owners of Sports Direct have signed a deal to take over the former BHS shop in Coventry city centre.

The building will become a huge new Sports Direct store, which will also house USC, Evans Cycles and GAME as well as a Belong gaming arena when it opens later this year.

The store, on the corner of the Upper Precinct and Smithford Way, has been empty since summer 2016.

Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Coventry City Council's cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change said: “This is absolutely great news. The former BHS store is a big shop in a prime location, right in the heart of the city centre. It’s a real boost that it will be filled by this leading retailer, bringing new retail destinations to our city centre."

Isn't that just moving from a high-rent location in town to a lower-rent location in town leaving the original empty?

New name finally revealed for Coventry's former BHS store

The former BHS store in Coventry city centre is set to reopen as a designer outlet.

The shop, which has sat empty since BHS collapsed in 2016, is set to be reopened as Flannels after it was purchased by the Frasers Group earlier this year.

Frasers Group, owned by Mike Ashley, is the parent company of House of Fraser, Flannels and GAME, among others.

In May, CoventryLive reported that the former BHS unit had been purchased by Mr Ashley's group and was set become a Sports Direct store, which will also house USC, Evans Cycles and GAME as well as a Belong gaming arena.

However, Flannels branded boards have appeared covering the shop front on the corner of Upper Precinct and Market Way, and Frasers Group have confirmed that the designer outlet will instead occupy the site.

A Frasers Group spokesman said: "[We] can confirm FLANNELS Coventry is set to open later this year.

"We’ll be able to confirm store details a little closer to the opening in the coming months."

Flannels is a stockist of brands such as Chanel, Charlotte Tilbury, Creed, Tom Ford and Armani, Skin Gym, Natasha Denona, as well as Dr Barbara Sturm, Tata Harper and Omorovicza.

Flannels Beauty will also be the exclusive bricks-and-mortar stockist of make-up brand Patrick Ta.

The Art Deco building was designated as Grade II listed in 2018.

The store was designed by George Coles, (1884-1963) who was one of Britain’s pioneers of cinema design.
