The Sky Blues suffered their third Championship defeat of the season

An early second half brace from Ivan Toney saw Coventry City slip to their third Championship defeat of the season at promotion hopefuls Brentford.

The Sky Blues were on the back foot for much of a testing first half at the brand new Brentford Community Stadium where the home side got at them from the first whistle – testing Marko Marosi with barely 30 seconds on the clock.

The No.1 made a smart reaction save to keep his side in the game when he denied centre-back Pontus Jansson from one of six corners in the first 21 minutes as City managed to weather the relentless waves of attack.

It took until ten minutes from the break before the visitors troubled the Bees’ keeper for the first time, when Ben Sheaf hit a shot from a tight angle - one of only two attempts on goal in the opening 45, and only one on target.

Thomas Frank’s men, meanwhile, enjoyed 12 attempts, four of which were on target, to tell the story of the first half.

The home side wasted no time at all after the break, however, in finally finding the back of the net when Toney poked home between Kyle McFadzean and Marosi in the box to give the Bees a 46th minute lead.

The striker doubled the lead nine minutes later when he got between Dom Hyam and Ryan Giles at the back post to connect with a pinpoint Emiliano Marcondes cross and send a powerful header past the keeper.

Matty Godden went closest to pulling one back when he got on the end of a loose ball punched clear from a corner by the keeper, but his hooked shot thumped the underside of the crossbar and dropped down on the line.

And despite giving a far better account of themselves in the final 30 minutes they just couldn't find a way back into the game.
