200 flout lockdown rules at Coventry student accommodation party

Police were called to the gathering at Arundel House, with the scenes causing 'deep concern' to the university



Around 200 people jump on tables and form a dancefloor as they rave to a grime song in apparent contravention of Covid-19 restrictions at a hall of residence.

The video clip, which has emerged on social media, shows a party with numbers far exceeding the Government's 'rule of six' stipulation aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus.

The tightly-packed crowd is shown holding up mobile phones, with several people jumping on tables as Digga D's song 'Woi' plays in the background.

The clip was filmed at Arundel House, close to Coventry University's main campus. and has, at time of publication, been viewed over 70,000 times.

A spokesman said Coventry University was aware of the incident and said any students found to be in breach of the university's code of conduct could face disciplinary proceedings.

Police said an agreement had been reached to shut down some communal areas in the accommodation and beef up security in light of last night's gathering.

An investigation is also underway to determine of the party had been planned

In the 37-second-long video, the crowd joins in the lyrics to the Digga D track as revellers jump up on tables to lead the party, with one man's trousers falling down.

The location in Whitefriars Lane is used as a hall of residence for Coventry University students.

The iPhone clip, which has been viewed thousands of times on Twitter, is entitled "No sleep in the C.O.V."

It is time stamped 3:06am on Tuesday, September 29.

One user replied: "It was in someones accom and security told them to move it to the common room."

Media commentator Kelvin MacKenzie has branded Coventry university students “the thickest in Britain” over the rave involving around 200 people in a hall of residence.

The shock jock ranted about the party, where a packed crowd flouted Covid-19 restrictions, in an online video with a clip of the gathering playing in the background.

The former Sun editor said: “You can’t turn on the TV or the radio without listening to some student blabbing their eyes out about how life has been so cruel to them.

“They can’t get on the sauce any more, they can’t go and sleep with 28,000 different people, they can’t enjoy themselves because they are going to be trapped in their rooms or their face-to-face with their teachers or lecturers has been reduced dramatically.

“If you want that, get to Coventry University, where they must have the thickest collection of students in the history of thick students.

“If you look on their website they are always talking about how big they are on the virus and how they have got Covid this, Covid that, Covid the other, well nobody told any of those thickos who go to that university about any of this, or they decided to take no notice.”

The Talksport founder, in a clip posted on the ‘A Spokesman Said’ platform yesterday (September 30), also singled out the university itself, claiming it had been advertising careers in the media.

He said: “Don’t go to Coventry University if you want to work hard, if you want to party and get on the sauce and eventually go into the media and have no work, get to Coventry University, a ridiculous place, the sooner it goes bust the better.”

Two Coventry students fined £200 over Covid breach party

Two students have been fined £200 each over a party at a university halls in breach of Covid-19 restrictions.

Footage filmed at the privately-run Arundel House at Coventry University, and shared on social media, showed a large gathering in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

West Midlands Police said it issued the fines following its investigation, in conjunction with the university.

The university has begun disciplinary action against a number of students.

A Coventry University spokesperson said it continued to work with West Midlands Police and Nido, the owner of the private accommodation, to investigate the "totally unacceptable incident".

It said its process to identify those involved continues, but it has already begun disciplinary proceedings.

I take issue with the words "Coventry students".

If they were living in a hall of residence then they were not "from Coventry".

Of course, it will stop at only 2. The Police have no interest in enforcing the COVID rules. They should have arrested people on the night instead of "reviewing CCTV footage" after the horse had bolted. Likewise, you can be assured that the University won't be suspending or dismissing any students. Apart from the loss of revenue, the bleeding hearts will argue that taking action will spoil the life chances of the students.

BTW, you'll notice that police also retreated from the incident at the Baba Balak Nath Temple instead of making arrests at the time then claimed to be "examining CCTV and body-worn camera footage". Where did this softly-softly policy come from? Pressure from Andy Street's office or CCC?
