An aggressive shoplifter who runs out of a Coventry store wearing a stolen pair of trainers is filmed being led away in his socks in the latest episode of a Channel 5 documentary.

The specialist security team at West Orchards Shopping Centre, who are being trailed by a camera team, is shown responding to the ‘code 21’ emergency in the city centre.

The man is stopped in Bishop Street and led to the mall vigorously protesting his innocence, carrying his own shoes after a member of staff takes the pair of blue Adidas back from him.

The store employee describes him as “very aggressive” as guards arrive on the scene in the penultimate episode of the fly-on-the-wall show.

But the shoplifter continues to protest his innocence as he is marched by two of the responders to a holding room in West Orchards, saying: “This is crazy situation, why?”

One of the guards replies: “You’ve been shoplifting.”

The trainer thief then claims that he put the receipt in a bin after leaving the store, which is outside the centre, and says he is homeless and living in shelters. He is photographed by the team and given a banning order from the mall after eventually admitting his crime.

The guards also deal with a verbally abusive man in a motorised wheelchair who swears at them and almost runs over a child as he is escorted out of the centre.

In a non-stop episode, a violent incident breaking out in the city centre Betfred store also demands the urgent attention of the guards, who include a dog handler.

The flashpoints are among incidents dealt with by guards as they are run off their feet in Shoplifters: At War With The Law, a six-part documentary series from Crackit Productions.

The introduction to the show describes the offence as a “nationwide epidemic that is hitting us all where it hurts most” and says that West Orchards is being “hit hard” by the perpetrators. The observational series follows the team as they try to turn the tide, monitoring 200 CCTV cameras, including some in unexpected locations, and stay alert to the tricks used by the shoplifters.

Episode 5 is due to air on Channel 5 on Monday, August 17 at 9pm.
