A Coventry hotel celebrating its 20th anniversary has completed a £1.4 million project to upgrade its air conditioning systems. Ramada Coventry in Earlsdon has refurbished all 166 bedrooms, including 44 suites.

The hotel opened on August 29, 2005, and will host an event on Thursday, September 18, to mark the occasion. The event will include a celebratory lunch in its Queen's Road restaurant and a collation of memories from long-standing staff members across the hotel's two decades.

The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Rachel Lancaster, will also dedicate a plaque during the lunch event.

Ramada has more than 70 staff members and boasts 92 standard bedrooms, 30 superior bedrooms, 8 accessible rooms, and 44 one-bedroom apartment suites, each with a workspace, dining area, lounge, and kitchenette.

All the rooms include an LCD screen, free WiFi, air conditioning, and the flexibility to accommodate a variety of meetings and events in a theatre, classroom, boardroom, or U-shape configuration. The hotel also has a dedicated meetings floor with 5 meeting rooms and an executive lounge for networking or breakout space, including coffee machines and refreshments.

Bosses say famous people have stayed at the city hotel, including Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Lenny Henry, and the hotel welcomed the Godiva puppet back home to Coventry after her appearance at the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Ramada is also focusing on green practices and environmental credentials. Future plans include decreasing its carbon footprint by installing solar panels and EV chargers.

Director of Sales at Ramada Coventry, Jan Gelbert, said: "It’s fantastic to be celebrating our 20th anniversary, having provided exceptional service for both business and leisure guests for two decades.

"This year, we have made a significant investment in upgrading the air conditioning in our bedrooms to ensure we can continue providing state-of-the-art facilities to our guests. We are incredibly thankful to our wonderful team, some of whom have been with us from the day we opened our doors, sharing warm smiles, crafting unforgettable experiences, and creating enduring relationships with our valued guests.

"To mark our anniversary, we’ll be looking to collate memories and old photos from across the years and put together a list of significant people who have stayed at the hotel, as well as hold a celebratory lunch in our restaurant. We’re excited for the remainer of 2025, and will shortly be releasing details of our Christmas parties."

Actually in The Butts rather than Earlsdon.

It's quite a bit older than twenty years and was originally the headquarters of British Telecom and called 'Mercury House'.

It's been used to house the homeless for a long time now.

That area is dead rough, especially at night.
