A popular Nuneaton town centre pub has been sold. The doors to the George Eliot Hotel closed yesterday (June 12) and a sign is now on the door to explain it is shut.

This is because it has been bought by the Crafty Pub Group. That is the same firm that took over the former Wetherspoons in Hinckley and turned it into 'The Crafty Baron'.

It will remain closed while the sale and 'cooling off' period is complete. Once re-opened, and in keeping with the Crafty Pub theme, the George Eliot Hotel will be known as 'The Crafty George Eliot'.

But new owner Nirad Solanki told CoventryLive that the pub will still retain its heritage, which dates back hundreds of years as a former coaching inn during the time when the town's famed novelist George Eliot penned her works.

Mr Solanki and his wife Payal are no strangers to Nuneaton. They lived in the St Nicolas Park area of town when he ran his first pub in Rugby.

A spokesman for the Crafty Pub Group and Elmesthorpe Brewery Company explained: "Having lived in Nuneaton for three years not so long ago they cant believe that our company is coming back to Nuneaton which is where they resided when they bought their first ever public house.

"It is a great opportunity and location to be part of with the new developments and changes happening. We have 12 sites within our group and the hope is to have a Crafty location in different places.

"Together Nirad and his wife Payal have worked extremely hard to support all the businesses and careers during covid and create mass job opportunities. Although trade has decreased dramatically since pre-Covid, Payal and Nirad strongly believe in the hospitality trade and they are fully fledged into it including, bars, restaurants, hotels and holiday parks."

Homage will be paid to the pub's past, too. An ale called the 'Crafty George’s Best Bitter will be specially brewed and sold on site.

No official opening date has been given for 'The Crafty George' but the company has said that they plan to make the most of one of the pub's biggest features. "With one of the largest beer gardens in the town centre, we want to strongly utilise the space and bring pub culture back in to towns, bigger and better and with a Crafty twist," the spokesman said.
