In early 1937 officals came to our house, told dad that we three boys would have to sleep in one bed, my elder sister would move in with us in the back room (with curtain) and her front box room would take two soldiers in the front box room, And that happened in many houses in the street.. The soldiers were to build the Huge Gunsites that surrounded the city. I think that there were 14 gun-sites around the City. ----OH My, the guns rattled windows, broke panes of glass and livened the place-up. and we kids had free lessons on Language of the different city they came from.

Good for civilian morale though when they opened up, even though they seldom actually hit anything.

A reminder that the forum is expected to be offline between the 3rd and 9th of August while a house move is in progress.

Yes I am feeling better thanks for all the well wishers, but back to the forum,

On the 19th of November 1940 Coventry tried a second evacuation twelve months after the chaos of the first one. I believe this failed also, but little was known about it, and you won,t find it in any history books or forums. This time Gas mask were not taken, but even so I still believed it failed.

Rebbonk
You have to remember that all newspapers were reduced by more than a third in size and bulk for the duration of the war, heavily censored they followed the leading paper on war stories etc. Bus loads of Coventry children left for a northern city, and trains were waiting at longford station to take more of them north. But that was were it ended, a second evacuation, there were no further reports as far as I know..

Thanks, Blitzkid. As I keep saying, first-hand knowledge is now getting thin on the ground and anything you can tell us is incredibly important. Please keep your memories coming.
