--------There was something strange and unreal to be standing outside this great crusader fort(1946)
with it's walls 8 feet thick of solid granite, that had stood the onslaught of thousands of Muslim.

While at the same time Coventry Cathedral was being built. with thick stone steps spiraling round it's wall in the same mode.
And to recall, in my childhood I had stood outside that stone building to. drawn by a religious calling.
But much of the popularity today of Coventry Cathedral must be attributed to the manner of it's destruction.

Rebbonk,
To answer your question about the Council, we would have to go back to 1919 and the peace talks, we treated Germany too harshly, and in the aftermath too lightly. and from that led to Coventry's Blitz, it's a very long story. There was a lot more involved pre-war than you can imagine, like the influence of Charles Lindbergh.

But what you really wanted, in my opinion and others, they must have felt a little guilty, they had years of time to build a huge deep well either in the Burgess were the training ground (Sherbourne) was for fire fighters or in pool meadow. They would never have ran out of water, ignored the Midland Daily Telegraph warnings from citizens about low flying of the enemy.

They had offers of money from Alfred Herbert and others to rebuild the Cathedral, but they wanted to hug the limelight of the new city, a new Cathedral and a city with it's first roof car parking in Europe, thousands fled abroad.

Further more, (Dutchman wrote somewhere) ----Applications to rebuild Properties were rejected on the grounds they did not fit with Councils future plans, after 27 years of lying idle-----

this included Smithford street or the White lion, The white Lion Gallery of 1942 of its future plans was completely ignored.

Rebbonk this is the page that tells the story two days after the blitz, that we all agreed with, and CHF did not or would not accept.

'Health & Safety' considerations were apparently not a huge concern when this picture was taken of a bomb disposal team and onlooker on the corner of Barras Lane and Norfolk Street:

Thank you Dutchman, yes people took silly risks But then they always will, like the guy named Lea fell from the battlements of the Cathedral 1738 and died two days later.
A small single grate that led down to the Bone house or crypt with a steep narrow iron ladder that led down into the depths, on the north side of the Cathedral must have been very dangerous. Queer tales of skeleton robbings for anatomical purposes abounded. Quaint inscriptions on the tomb stones, In old days the churches were dark and mysterious places.

I have just returned from a week in Brighton Hospital and almost fornight in Haywords heath hospital.

In 1836 Coventry got rid of Butchers Row and other streets, we all thought it was about slum clearance, but in 1939 it showed the City had now road clearance from Coventry rail Station to the city's Hospital in Stoney Stanton Road.this became a Godsend during the Bombing.

There was not a cat or dog in Britain in 1940, that makes recent books look completely wrong.
