Before the bombers had reached the coast the Army came into Coventry. their cheerful banter took the sting of the tail of the raid, they did everything that could be done, and brought back hope--they built hot kitchen food to 17 locations in Coventry, they mended pipes and installations, did everything until the Council had built cheap restaurants, made buildings safe, we couldn't praise them enough, and you will find the Council praised them four days later in the M.D.T

Lets get some thing straight, there were no council getting rid of buildings in Broadgate, the same buildings were there in 1940 as was in 1936 to my mind,

Blitzkid, from your recollections, the reason for the city centre building clearance would be down to the Blitz and not the council?

The council are often blamed, but you believe this blame is incorrect?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Yes with Broadgate; but the war was something else. All paper rounds started with the farthest away and worked back to the shop, all paper rounds had to finish before the blackout, but with no dogs about this could be done quite quickly. unless you got a "Mrs Robinson" (film) affair. They did happen. in every Country.

Broadgate was no more than two rows of shops, that was completely destroyed by Bombs. On the eastern side the Martin's Bank was about four buildings inside the High Street, after the bombing it was the corner building, on the other side only half of Burtons survived, the rest flattened. down as far as the churchyard on the east side west orchard on the Burtons side.

Martin's bank survived for quite a time, IIRC?

They were absorbed by Barclays who no longer needed the building so it was sold to the Coventry Economic Building Society circa 1978/79.

The Friday morning after the blitz all newspapers kept to the the censored tone, except one, this was the BBC whose report was diabolical and Churchill was in a rage, the report was just what Hitler and his minister Goebbels wanted. Churchill raced round to the BBC and laid down the Law.

It was said Hitler-Goebbels did a little gig, and it was said that Hitler was so pleased that he cancelled any further bombing of Coventry (could this be true?) But we did not have any further bombing for months and German newspapers seemed to think the same.

In 1933 the welsh people presented Queen Elizabeth with a dolls house, it had 6 foot rooms so you can see how big it was.

In 1951 the palace employed a man to light a fire each Thursday night in a room in B. Palace, keep it going all night so the room would be warm for the princesses next morning to have dancing lessons.
