Posted: Mon Jun 22, 2020 10:20 pmUltra-rare picture of experimental electric locomotive E2001 (formerly E1000) at Rugby shed. This was a conversion from a Western Region experimental gas turbine locomotive and used a mercury arc rectifier to convert AC to DC which was extremely hazardous in a moving vehicle. The first production locos used solid-state germanium rectifiers in place of liquid mercury.
