I was at Coventry Station when the overhead wires were installed and was amused to see that the special train they used was hauled by a STEAM locomotive!

Ultra-rare picture of experimental electric locomotive E2001 (formerly E1000) at Rugby shed. This was a conversion from a Western Region experimental gas turbine locomotive and used a mercury arc rectifier to convert AC to DC which was extremely hazardous in a moving vehicle. The first production locos used solid-state germanium rectifiers in place of liquid mercury.
