The majestic old HSBC bank will be transformed

Inside plans of what a new bingo hall could look like in Nuneaton town centre have been revealed.

Further details have emerged about the proposals to transform the former HSBC bank into a bingo hall.

The building has stood empty for the past seven years after being at the heart of the town's finances for more than 100 years.

According to detailed plans in an application submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council only the ground floor of the historic bank will be used.

Special permission is needed for the works as the building is Grade II listed.

In the application, there is a design and access statement which reads: "The site has been left vacant for a many years and is in a bad state of repairs.

"Additionally to this, two external lead pipe rain water pipes have been stolen and thus has caused water ingress into the sub floor causing the internal floor to buckle.

"We are unable to rectify this until we meet a Heritage representative who can guide us on the investigations allowed then the required repairs.

"Only works to the the ground floor and mezzanine are to be actioned, however remedial works will be actioned. Remedial works are, glazing replaced to upper floor windows, replace entrance glazing and minor repairs to the roof to make the building water tight. Detritus will also be required to be removed from some external gutterings.

"Existing windows, walls and architraves to remain. The existing heating and cooling system to be re-used so existing plant machinery to remain.

"All that is required for removal is the former bank partitions and the suspending ceiling to the main area replacing with a floating gantry.

"All other areas to remain as is. No use required to first and second floor, to remain shut up. A separate Planning/Listed Building application has been submitted for 'Change of use' which had lapsed."

This iconic Nuneaton town centre building is back on the market again

A majestic former bank building in the heart of Nuneaton town centre is back on the market.

Another attempt is being taken to breathe life into the old HSBC Bank in Newdegate Street,

As we reported in our newsletter, proposals for it to be a games arcade, then plans to turn it into a bingo hall - were submitted.

But those appear to have not come to fruition.

Now the Grade II listed building is available either for sale or to let with Holt Commercial.

Chris Hobday, associate at Holt Commercial, said other similar properties close by had recently been successfully redeveloped.

“There is considerable excitement regarding the plans for Nuneaton town centre and we feel properties such as this are ripe for investment as a result," he said.

"Given the owner has listed it both for sale and to let, we believe it will attract interest from a wide range of parties who will be keen to make the most of the prominent position and significant potential the building offers.

"We have recently been involved with a similarly attractive property in the town that has undergone redevelopment which has worked extremely well and should give confidence to other potential investors and occupiers."
