It paves the way for a huge housing project

Plans to fill in a well and demolish the covered reservoir at the former Whitley Pumping Station have been given the green light.

An application was submitted to Coventry City Council in June to work on the site on London Road.

This would include grouting, infilling of the well and borehole and demolishing the covered reservoir.

This would not initially see the current use of the site change in any way - but paves the way for a major planning project in the future.

Last year it was revealed that Homes England, the Government’s housing accelerator, has acquired the land with a view to developing it.

The national housing agency is currently working with Coventry City Council’s planning team on proposals for the former pumping station site.

It would eventually result in the site being used for residential purposes - though this will be subject to a separate planning application.

The applicants have confirmed that the development would include affordable housing.

Earlier this month, the plans to demolish the covered reservoir, and all other works at the site were given the green light .

Essentially, this acts as preparatory work, with a full planning application for homes expected shortly thereafter.

The land was allocated by the city council in order to help meet Coventry's housing needs going forward.

As for the site itself, the Whitley Pumping Station dates back to Victorian times and Homes England is keen to retain the historic building and bring it back into use by working with the council.

The site was at one point owned by Severn Trent , which submitted an application for a re-use of the former Whitley Pumping Station - turning it into apartments.

But that plan never got off the ground and now the site is owned by Homes England.

Homes England said proposals for the site will be shared with the public as part of a consultation exercise in 2019.
