Dutchman's note: the circular market was not built on the site of the Rex and Barracks markets as suggested in the above-linked article, it was built to replace them. There was another open market in Smithford Street just below where Woolworths was later built.

It is always a pleasure to trawl round the market and the stallholders are very friendly and the O/H says the prices are very good and always have a cuppa and chat with Mick at the cafe so all in all, Coventry should be proud of a treasure

This is a view of the original fish market just behind Broadgate:

Some people here may remember when Coventry had more than one market? There were the Rex, West Orchard and Barracks markets to name just three.

Thanks for those pictures Dutchman, they add nicely.

I reckon we're building up a nice little section on history here.

There's a familiar face in there. Wonder if he's reading this? :)

I don't go there very often to be honest and am surprised it was listed. My better half does visit from time to time and usually comes home with a bun or two.

I did hear that the original plans for the redevelopment of the lower precinct included "moving" the market there but the traders weren't happy with the height of the roof or something silly so it didn't go ahead in that format.
