Anger at planned move of city landmark

A famous Coventry landmark could be moved under regeneration plans announced by the city council, sparking a row with some local residents

The Coventry Cross, a copy of a landmark dating back to the 1300s, could be moved from the cobbled area between the city's cathedrals and Holy Trinity church to a space in nearby Ironmonger Row at the rear of the Primark store.

Vincent Hammersley, from the Coventry Society said moving the cross would be wrong.

"You don't move a significant monument for the short-term needs of a food outlet that may or may not be here in 10 years' time."

The city's head of regeneration, Jim O'Boyle said moving the landmark, at a cost of £150,000, would allow the redevelopment of the area.

"I want our city to be thriving and bustling, not a mausoleum draped in aspic," he said.

O'Boyle hasn't got a clue!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Coventry Cross move now sparks fears parts of historic monument could be lost

PLANS to relocate the historic Coventry Cross have now sparked fears that parts of the monument could be lost.

Heritage group the Coventry Society has raised fresh concerns after a planning application was submitted by Coventry City Council.

As we reported last month, proposals to relocate and restore the sculpture to outside Primark and Greggs sparked anger – and are set to cost the taxpayer £150,000.

But a council spokesperson has acknowledged this budget only covers the ‘dismantling and cleaning’ of the Cross – and not its restoration.

The society is concerned parts of the monument may be demolished, with parts needing to be totally reconstructed.

They also fear that – like the much-loved Naiad statue finally back on display at Friargate – it could be placed in storage and hidden from public view.

The society’s Paul Maddocks said: “The City Council has been asked about the total cost of restoring the sculpture and re-erecting it and is not able to answer the question.

“They say that until the existing cross is dismantled and they have been able to assess the fixing arrangements, existing steel frame and other key elements no final cost can be provided from contractors.

“However we have heard from a reliable source that the total cost is likely to be in the region of £500,000, leaving a shortfall of around £350,000.

“We also question why the public sector is being asked to pay for a relocation which only appears to benefit one business.”

The society and Mr Wagstaff had previously expressed concerns the sculpture is out of character with the modern architecture which surrounds its new position.

They claim the monument was designed specifically to be part of the city’s medieval quarter.

The arrogance of O'Boyle over this has been staggering.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Is there any update on the moving of the Coventry Cross and the painting of the ceiling of the crypt?

The Coventry Society has organised a protest against moving the cross. I haven't heard anything about the painting though.

Nearly 800 sign petition against moving medieval Coventry Cross monument

Image

NEARLY 800 people have signed a petition opposing controversial plans to relocate the historic Coventry Cross monument.

The landmark – located near Coventry Cathedral on the corner of Holy Trinity Church – dates back to the 14th Century in previous forms.

The current ‘Coventry Cross’ is a replica designed by celebrated sculptor George Wagstaff in 1976.

As we reported in August, proposals to relocate and restore the sculpture to outside Primark and Greggs sparked anger – and are set to cost the taxpayer £150,000.

Now a petition submitted by heritage group the Coventry Society to the council entitled ‘Save the Coventry Cross’ has attracted 787 signatures.

The petition, which can be viewed on the Coventry City Council website, reads: “I object to Coventry City Council’s plan to demolish the Coventry Cross with no firm plan to rebuild it in a suitable place and with no explanation why public funds should be used to facilitate commercial development on this site.”
