What are these? (Crow Lane)

Postby Marenqo » Fri Aug 24, 2018 8:36 pm

Can anyone help me and say what these are? I asked the council but they don't know. They are located on Crow Lane, next to the ringroad, behind the Casino on Spon Street. Are they remainders left behind of the old Rudge works?

Thanks a lot!

I have absolutely no idea. Since they are embedded into the sidewalk I'm more than a little surprised that the council have no answer. It seems a deliberate act not to remove them, so surely there is a reason why?

If I had to guess, I'd be going for the former factory (GEC?) too. - But they look a bit too close for the typical infill that would have been used in what I remember as the GEC. - May be the perspective of the photograph.

But, of course, I may be wide of the mark. ;)
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Hello Marenqo and :welwave: to the forum.

I don't think they're part of the former Rudge Works? My best guess is that a heavy goods vehicle demolished the wall between the lane and the pedestrian footpath at some time in the past and the girders were embedded there to prevent it from happening again. Also as far as I know the lane is now a private access road and nothing to do with the council any more.

According to this map the girders would be located on the opposite side of Crow Lane from any of the works buildings:

Hi Marenqo

It's at https://www.old-maps.co.uk

You will have to fiddle around with the zoom setting and thumbnail images a bit to find the right one.
