Ernest was the son of John Davenport Siddely who founded the Siddeley Autocar Company which later merged with Armstrong-Whitworth to become the Armstrong-Siddeley Company. They continued producing cars up until 1960.

There was no driving test in those days. The only requirement for a driver's license was a character reference from a Justice of the Peace or as in this case it appears a senior policeman.
