Was watching the TV show 'American Restoration' last night and they were saying these were from the 1940s but I remember seeing kids (mostly girls) playing on them in Coventry in the 1960s.

Yes you probably did see them in the 60s as they were manufactured long before then. Tin plate was the preferred material for making all sorts of toys ranging from toy soldiers to toy cars.
As for the soldiers the tin was replaced by lead, far better material for the children to chew on.
