Much-loved mosaic tiles in the Spon Street subway that have been there for 50 years have been painted over.

Coventry City Council said some of the tiles on the walls of the Spon Street subway were damaged and had come loose.

And sections of the subway have been painted with anti-graffiti paint covering the green tiles underneath that so many Coventry residents were fond of.

The tiles are thought to have been there for at least 50 years.

A council spokesperson said: “We were contacted by the organisers of the Spon Spun Festival who asked if we would help to clean up the subway, which we were happy to do.

“Once we started work, we discovered that many of the original mosaic tiles were damaged or had come loose so we needed to remove them. We have also painted sections with anti-graffiti paint to help keep the subway cleaner and brighter.

“We are preserving sections of the original tiles and these will remain on show within the subway. During the clean-up, we also found the original artwork depicting scenes of old Coventry which used to be displayed in the subway.

“We’re working with local art groups to restore them and hope to have them back on display within the subway for everyone to enjoy soon.”
