Gateway to Earlsdon in early 1900s

Postby dutchman » Thu Mar 30, 2017 12:20 am

Local historian Bill Dunn from the Earlsdon Research Group has sent us this photograph of a gated road at Earlsdon taken around the turn of the last century

He says: “The gate in the picture stood in Earlsdon Lane, now Earlsdon Avenue South, on the boundary between Earlsdon and the Gregory Estate.

“It was sited adjacent to a path which is still present and which now runs from Earlsdon Avenue through to Morningside.

“The view, looking towards Earlsdon, was taken around 1900 by Edwin Walker, a gold watch case maker.

“He was a founder member of the Coventry and Midland Photographic Society and lived on the corner of Earlsdon Terrace and Cromwell Street, now Berkeley Road South.”

The footpath mentioned in the above article actually runs all the way into town although sections of it have been replaced by Dalton Road and Grosvenor Road.

This is another view of the same location, presumably after the gate had been removed:

This picture was taken a short distance from the entrance to what is now Earlsdon Avenue which can be seen in the background:

My thanks to Melisandre for supplying the picture.
