The owners of Bostocks in Nuneaton said the hardship of town centre trading had played its part in forcing the closure.

Kim Bateman, of the firm, said business rates and parking costs for customers had left her with no option but to shut.

Ian Powell, of the borough council, said the authority was trying to help.

Ms Bateman said other factors, such as supermarket competition and mobile meat traders had also affected business.

"Although it will break my heart to close the business I don't see I've got any other option but to do that," she said,

A small business unit in Nuneaton can cost about £9,500 in rates.

About one in ten shops in the town are empty, with one bearing a sign that says "Goodbye and thanks to all our customers. See you in Atherstone, where there is free parking."

Atherstone is about six miles from Nuneaton.

Mr Powell said Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council recognised traders were experiencing difficulties.

"We have launched our own pilot discount scheme to try and provide further help above what the government provides," he said.

"Car parking charges are lower than competing towns in the area."
