Old Fire Station

I believe the old fire station was originally built with only 3 bays. 3 more were added to the left hand side at some point. Does anyone know when?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

That's correct. There were originally three cottages on the northern side.

I suspect it was 1935 when it became a full-time professional force for the first time. Prior to that it was run by volunteers.

Hales Street Fire Station (which was the City's 4th Fire Station) opened on the 9th October 1902, the 3-bay extension came into use on the 27th December 1934.

1st was at the Barracks (Smithford Street), 2nd St Mary's Street and the 3rd in Priory Street before moving to Hales Street.

6th May 1914, the good folk of Coventry got to see 2 brand new Motor Fire Appliances at the old Fire Station, these were the City's first ones,(actually they had arrived very late on the 5th, both having driven from Dennis Brothers Ltd, Guildford).

A somewhat very quiet centenary for our Fire Service!
