A luxury home with links to author Jane Austen is for sale near Coventry – for a cool £1.5million.

South Garden is part of the palatial Stoneleigh Abbey, which the 19th Century novelist’s cousin, the Reverend Thomas Leigh, inherited more than 200 years ago.

Austen visited him at his new home and estate near Coventry.

She was so impressed, she used it as the basis for Sotherton Court in Mansfield Park.

The main buildings of the Abbey – on the site of a 12th Century Cistercian monastery – still stand, with the main rooms and the gardens open to the public.

But part of the house was converted into flats, with houses on the estate sold to private buyers.

South Garden – a five-bedroom house, with four reception rooms and three bathrooms – was built in 1999 on an acre of land in the grounds, with stunning views of the abbey.

Paula and Zag Asghar moved into the house seven years ago with their two sons and Paula started the Stoneleigh Abbey Book Club.

The gesture was a tribute to the connection with Jane Austen – best known for writing Pride and Prejudice – but also to get to know the 25 other families now living on the estate.

Pride and Prejudice is one of Britain’s best-loved novels and was turned into a TV series starring Colin Frith as Mr Darcy.

The Asghars restored a Victorian greenhouse, one of 10 which once stood on the estate to grow exotic fruit, and transformed it into a conservatory where the book club meets.

Paula said: “It is the perfect environment for entertainment, or just for relaxing.

“After dark, the lights glow magically across the courtyard and it never fails to please as we watch the sun set over the abbey while enjoying a glass of wine.

“We are very self-contained with our own walled garden, and cinema, swimming pool, gym, sauna and tennis court.

“We share two other walled gardens with our small group of neighbours and we can all harvest the superb produce from the walled orchard, or play croquet. The Avon flows behind us so we can also settle by the river.”

Residents have use of parts of the abbey itself and hold parties on New Year’s Eve in one of the sumptuous rooms. The Asghars are selling up to move to Dubai where Zag already works in IT.

South Garden, which also has a triple garage with two rooms and a bathroom above to create guest accommodation, has already attracted interest from would-be buyers in the area and from further afield.

If you are looking to move house and have £1.5m to spare, contact Julie Southorn, of Fine & Country, of Leamington, which is selling South Garden. Call 01926 455950.

Bit of a stretch by the Telegraph to claim it has links with Jane Austin.
