There will be an open day at the Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre in Avenue Road, Nuneaton, this Saturday and anyone can go along to find out what is inside the four walls.

Throughout the day there will be displays and activities put on by a number of the groups who use the building, with lots to see and do for both adults and children.

For the youngsters there will be a chance to learn lessons in the Victorian schoolroom. They will take their places at desks, wearing authentic clothes, before finding out how to write with steel ink pens and inkwells and afterwards everyone can also take a tour of the Victorian Parlour, where there is an old range and bathtub.

In particular parents and grandparents will be interested to see the Museum of Memories and the Scullery as both rooms are packed with items which will make memories flood back.

Visitors will also spend time in the Nuneaton brickyard which is full of chimney pot moulds and old bricks and there is also a display by Nuneaton Model Engineers, which features working models of machines.

Also on show at the centre open day in the newly decorated Newdegate Gallery will be models of canal boats from the Tom Bradbury Collection as well as a scale model of Albert Square, home of EastEnders, made by local modelmaker Clint Hancox.

The activities will not only be fun, but also educational and for people going along there will also be a chance to discover more about the works of Nuneaton writer George Eliot, as an actor, dressed at the author, will be handing out information about her books.

John Burton, chairman at the Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre, is hoping that scores of local people go along on the day to see what the building has to offer.

He said: “Here is a chance for an inexpensive few hours out in Nuneaton. Many people drive or walk down Avenue Road and have no idea what is going on in the old school building next to Wembrook School and in front of the Craft Centre. We hope to get a lot of new visitors to see the great changes we have made.

“There will be lots to do, lots to see, lots to talk about and admire. Three places to visit – all on the same site.”

Not only will the day be an entertaining way to learn about times gone by but there will also be a song and a dance to keep everyone occupied.

At 10.30am there will be performance from the The Anker Morris Men and later in the morning there will be music from Nuneaton Marching Band.

Anyone in Nuneaton who has always wanted to find out more about their ancestors is also being advised to take advantage of a top opportunity. At the event a number of family historians will be on hand in the dedicated Local History Research room to help visitors make a start on their family history projects.

If revellers still have some spare time after touring the centre there will be a chance to enjoy some refreshments and people can also have a go on a special tombola.

There will also be a coffee morning taking place at Chilvers Coton Parish Church which everyone is being welcomed to or visitors could also visit Chilvers Coton Craft Centre and look at the unique collections of skilled craftsmen and women who will be selling their items. A cafe is also open in the craft centre.

People are being reminded that the open day is free for all to go along to and is suitable for adults and children of all ages. It will be taking place from 10am until 4pm and people can drop by when they wish.
