I have never been able to find any record of the Alfred Herbert factory in Gosford Street.
I don't think so Rebbonk? It was probably part of the former Alpha motor works which was owned at one point by Morris. I think the name on the gate just read "A.H Herbert & Son".rebbonk wrote:I have never been able to find any record of the Alfred Herbert factory in Gosford Street.
Could this be the Hillman and Herbert factory?

I wouldn't swear to the exact wording, it was 1967 when I last saw the gatesrebbonk wrote:dutchman wrote:"A.H Herbert & Son".
Gets more interesting.... it appears that Alfred Herbert only had daughters (4). The Herbert I referred to above was his elder brother William.
The Alpha works is well documented. It covered a large area behind the buildings on the north side of Gosford Street. Alpha Motors failed and at least one part of it was taken over by William Morris who manufactured gearboxes there. When Morris quit, that part of the works was taken over by Pattison's who also made machine tools. What happened to the rest of the former Alpha works is less well documented.rebbonk wrote:dutchman wrote:This is an Alpha motor works product advert from 1913

Do we have anything more to go on?
