Fiddler on the Roof & The Scout's Gang Show are advertised as being on at the theatre.

It has been posted on flickr with an estimated 1980-1982 date range, mainly based on the registration of the bus.
18 to Canley if memory serves.

I think the people at Flickr have pretty much nailed it. The new bus station hasn't been built yet so that must also narrow down the timescale?

This was shot a few years earlier. Notice many of the buses are still in Coventry Transport colours:

It's my Flickr photograph. It must be between 1979, certainly no later than Nov 1983 cause I wouldnt have been there then. I just added another of the subway just outside Fishy Moores - and the De Vere here http://www.flickr.com/photos/36137127@N05/4338227377/ and what about the 1948 one next to it of Broadgate.

Have to admit I would not have identified the location of the 1948 shot if you hadn't told me :oops:

I think the photo was taken in Smithford Street rather than Hertford Street? The low wall is to protect people from falling into the basement of the prewar Marks & Spencers building which later became the precinct toilets! The temporary buildings to the left are part of West Orchard market.

Given the date the picture was taken (1948) I suspect the object in front of what is now the Flying Standard is a banner to commemorate the visit of Princess Elizabeth. In fact, from the way people are dressed I believe it is the actual day that Princess Elizabeth visited! The banner is supended from the arm of one of the ornate lamp standards which survived for some time after the war.

Thanks for all the welcomey trousers all. Well I think I (or one of the Flickr lot), will have to get out with the camera around Broadgate and see which picture gets the closest angle. Dutchmans notes on the visit were a real surprise and very interesting. I will see if it rings a bell when I see my Mum next.

I think that to replicate the angle today you would need to stand in the precinct somewhere below Broadgate House and your view would be obscured by all the building work which has taken place since then?

This picture was taken from a similar angle but from very much closer to the Timothy White building showing the ornate street lights in front and temporary Owen-Owen store behind:
