An old air raid shelter has been uncovered by enthusiasts in Coventry’s War Memorial Park.

The historic Second World War site had been unaccessible after becoming overgrown down the years.

Volunteers from the Friends of War Memorial Park hope to fully excavate it in the years to come – as the inside has been completely filled in.

The ultimate aim is to make the shelter a museum to celebrate the history of the park.

Rene Whitlock is the leader of the Friends’ history group and was one of a handful to uncover the shelter last week.

“During the war there were people in the park manning the anti-aircraft guns and they would use the air raid shelter,” Rene, of Woodfield Road, Earlsdon, said.

“The air raid shelter appears in our Friends of War Memorial Park history trail but you wouldn’t be able to find it because it was so overgrown.

“It’s all part of raising interest in the park’s upkeep. We want to keep the momentum up.”
