Ever wondered what's beneath your feet?

The British Geological Survey site contains quite a database

Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I saw them bore the test holes for Ringway Whitefriars in 1965. They used a piledriver machine and it took weeks to do each one. On at least one occasion they had to smash through the concrete floor of the former GEC factory first. When each test bore was completed they dismantled the pile-driving rig and moved it to the next location. It was left unattended at night so us kids could play on it if we liked.
