Coventry is set to 'lose a piece of history' as one of its oldest pubs has announced it is going to close.

The Phoenix in Gosford Street has confirmed that it will close at the start of next month.

It brings the building's association with the city's pub scene since the 1700s to an historic end.

To many it is known as 'The Campbell' having been officially titled 'The Colin Campbell for decades

This is acknowledged in a post on The Phoenix's page, where the closure has been officially announced - on Sunday, September 6.

"It’s with a heavy heart that I announce the imminent closure of The Phoenix," the post states.

"We will be trading until the weekend of the 6th September at which point we will then close our doors for the final time.

"This is still very new for the team, as they’re still trying to get their heads around it all. It’s been very emotional news but we really want to end on a high, welcome you all in to enjoy the last few weeks of The Phoenix and give the pub the send off it really deserves.

"I know for many of you, it runs much deeper and further than simply The Phoenix.

"The Colin Campbell has a deep rooted history in Coventry and throughout its evolution we’ve all shared the same passion and love for the pub at one time or another. Coventry is losing a piece of history, and that’s what really hurts in all of this."

Its current manager added it has been an 'unbelievable two years that I will cherish forever.' and they said they 'fell in love with the venue'.

"It's been an unbelievable 2 years that I will cherish forever. Originally I only came here to look after the venue whilst they found a suitable Manager, travelling to and from Nottingham every day. Falling in love with the venue, the team & the city was never in my plan, but I did. So I applied and got the job."

Tributes were paid to the incredible RAWK nights hosted by Harris, quiz nights hosted by Steve and so many more amazing events, as well as the Bottomless Brunches and also celebrating Coventry winning the Championship and getting back to the Premier League.

"I’ve worked with and met so many amazing people in my time here and I can’t thank you all enough, and thank all of the previous managers and employees that have paved the way for us all," the post adds.

"On behalf of the team, thank you for making this venue such an incredible one to work in. Thank you for always being so welcoming and joining us for so many unforgettable times.

"It has been a pleasure to serve you all and we hope you will come and see us in these last few weeks to really show how strong this community is. See you all soon."

No it doesn't!

Whitefriars Street didn't exist until the early 20th century so there could hardly be a pub on the corner of it.

There was a pub very nearby in Gosford Street called the Parrot and Griffin which dated from 1720 and it's possible the licence was transferred to what became the Sir Colin Campbell when that was built.
