'We need to give back these men the respect that they deserve'A campaign is underway to restore a vandal-hit war memorial in Nuneaton to give fallen miners 'the respect they deserve'.
It has been more than a decade since heartless thieves stole one of the two bronze plaques from the memorial in the grounds of the Griff and Coton Sports Club.
The plaque depicted the names of 49 men who worked in the mines in and around Nuneaton and laid down their lives during World War I.
The vandals have not been brought to justice and now, 16 years after they struck, a fundraising campaign has been launched to replace the plaque.
Alan Tyman has set-up a page on JustGiving to pay for the replacement as well as some much-needed restoration works to the memorial itself.
"The missing plaque needs replacing and the war memorial restoring to its original condition so that our community can give back these men the respect that they deserve," the page reads.
"Please help by making a donation to our Memorial fund so that the memory of those who died will live on and be given their dignity back."
The fundraiser aims to raise £2,000 to carry out the works.
So far, 10 per cent of the grand total needed has been donated.
