Birds-eye photos of Coventry in the Sixties

Mon Dec 17, 2012 3:27 pm

After reading our story about the discovery of rare colour photographs of 1960s Coventry, Telegraph reader Dave Elson sent in his own pictures of the city from the same era.

He was just 18 when he climbed the spire of Coventry Cathedral in 1962 with a basic 35mm camera and started snapping away.

The former Rugby councillor, now aged 68, was born and bred in Coventry.

He said: “It was back in the day when you could almost get to the very top of the cathedral spire.

“It was a very very cheap camera. It didn’t even have a telephoto lens.”

Dave got in touch following the discovery of a collection of colour slides of Coventry in an attic in Wales.

Note the picturesque building opposite the Cathedral in Priory Street in the top picture which was demolished by the church commissioners for no good reason
