Can anyone date this photograph?

Fiddler on the Roof & The Scout's Gang Show are advertised as being on at the theatre.

It has been posted on flickr with an estimated 1980-1982 date range, mainly based on the registration of the bus.
18 to Canley if memory serves.

I think the people at Flickr have pretty much nailed it. The new bus station hasn't been built yet so that must also narrow down the timescale?

I have added a Flickr Note to highlight the Flying Standard (as is now).

I think the photo was taken in Smithford Street rather than Hertford Street? The low wall is to protect people from falling into the basement of the prewar Marks & Spencers building which later became the precinct toilets! The temporary buildings to the left are part of West Orchard market.

Given the date the picture was taken (1948) I suspect the object in front of what is now the Flying Standard is a banner to commemorate the visit of Princess Elizabeth. In fact, from the way people are dressed I believe it is the actual day that Princess Elizabeth visited! The banner is supended from the arm of one of the ornate lamp standards which survived for some time after the war.

Thanks for all the welcomey trousers all. Well I think I (or one of the Flickr lot), will have to get out with the camera around Broadgate and see which picture gets the closest angle. Dutchmans notes on the visit were a real surprise and very interesting. I will see if it rings a bell when I see my Mum next.

I think that to replicate the angle today you would need to stand in the precinct somewhere below Broadgate House and your view would be obscured by all the building work which has taken place since then?
