A historic Coventry pub features in a new book about boozers which date back to the Tudor period.

The Golden Cross, in Hay Lane, is listed in Ye Olde Good Inn Guide about the “golden age of the alehouse”.

The city centre pub dates back to 1583 and is one of the oldest in Coventry.

Co-author James Moore said: “The fact that this gem survived the Blitz is incredible. The Tudor period was the golden age of the alehouse and inn.

"Our guide allows you to step back into the world of Shakespeare and Elizabeth I to enjoy a drink in atmospheric places which they may very well have frequented themselves.”

The book references a number of facts from the period, including from documents found in Coventry in 1520 that beer consumption in Tudor England was as much as 17 pints a week.
