Further dip in petrol prices unlikely, Coventry motorists warned

Image

Motorists are enjoying the biggest fall in petrol prices since the credit crunch days of 2008.

But the AA has warned that a further dip is unlikely.

Average petrol prices in the UK fell 5.49p a litre between mid-September and mid-October – the biggest monthly fall since the 11.5p petrol price collapse in November 2008, the AA said.

Petrol is now averaging 132.16p a litre while diesel has dipped from 142.50p a litre to 139.12p.

The AA said the price falls have cut £2.74 off the cost of refuelling a small petrol car and £3.84 off the bill for a Ford Mondeo-sized petrol vehicle. A family with two petrol cars will have seen the monthly fuel bill fall by £10.

With the UK consuming typically 1.55 billion litres of petrol a month, the 5.48p average price reduction has diverted around £2.83 million a day from the pump to the high street and other consumer spending.

Comparing average regional pump prices for mid-October, Northern Ireland is most expensive for petrol at 132.9p a litre – despite seeing the biggest fall over the past month. London, the north of England, and Yorkshire and Humberside are jointly the cheapest areas at 131.9p.

Despite a 3.3p-a-litre reduction since mid-September, Scotland remains most expensive for diesel at 140.1p a litre while London is cheapest at 138.6p.

For the past month, the wholesale price of petrol has been largely at the same level it was during December. This has brought the current pump average back to where it started the year, at around 132p a litre.

Retailers have responded with prices that are, for the most part, remarkably consistent with where they started the year, the AA said.

But it went on: “The prospect of a further drop in pump prices is doubtful, with the pound losing some of its value against the dollar and a US budget agreement likely to strengthen the American currency.

“The averted industrial action at the Grangemouth refinery reduces the threat of higher oil and wholesale fuel costs in north west Europe. However, the future of UK refineries is back under the spotlight.”

AA president Edmund King said: “A more-than-£2.50-a-tank cut in petrol costs for families is a dramatic improvement on its own. But, heading into winter with cars using more fuel, the timing couldn’t be better.

“Alongside Asda, Sainsbury’s decision to fully reflect the fall in wholesale prices has been a huge benefit for drivers and businesses.

“However, the AA is also encouraged by the growing band of non-supermarket retailers challenging the pricing of other supermarkets whose prices in many places are far less generous.’’

^^^Well, the Telegraph got that completely wrong as usual!

Petrol was 121.9 at the Butts BP station last night (not the cheapest) while diesel was 124.9.

I strongly suspect the government will jack up fuel duty very shortly. A rise was already in the pipeline last year and was only postponed because of the increasing price of oil. The government is now completely skint and oil prices have fallen so they have the perfect excuse to reinstate the rise.

Petrol at Coventry forecourts set to fall below £1 a litre in New Year

The plunging price of world oil could soon see the cost of a litre of petrol dipping below £1, the RAC has said.

This would take prices at the pumps falling to their lowest level since the end of May 2009, the RAC added.

It said that the price of Brent crude, now down below the 60-dollars-a-barrel mark for the first time since early July 2009, was predicted to keep on dropping.

In Coventry and the West Midlands unleaded fuel is now selling at around 112p per litre in some outlets but is expected to plunge even further as the major surpermarkets use fuel as a post-festive loss leader.

The RAC said it expected petrol would eventually be sold nationally for under £1 a litre as the wholesale oil price continues to fall.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “What’s currently happening at the pumps with falling fuel prices is something many motorists will not remember seeing before.

“Talk of prices going up like a rocket and falling like a feather could not be further from the truth as retailers have been quick to pass on savings at the forecourt.”

The RAC’s monitoring of fuel prices shows the UK average price of a litre of petrol is 116.9p - nearly 14p a litre cheaper than at the start of the year.

Diesel is nearly 16p cheaper - 122.33p a litre now compared to 138.24p in January. The average supermarket price of fuel is 114.26p a litre for petrol and 120.18p for diesel.

Mr Williams added: “The cost of going to visit family and friends this Christmas will be the cheapest it’s been for nearly five years, but the prospect of petrol going below £1 a litre in the new year is incredible, particularly when prices at the beginning of 2014 seemed to be heading ever upwards.

“Current forecasts are for average petrol prices to fall to below 110p a litre in the next fortnight and diesel to drop to under 116p.

“At these average prices across the country the cheapest retailers will almost certainly be selling petrol for around 105p a litre, or even lower.”

I'll believe it when I see it. There's a lot more to the price of petrol than the cost of oil.

Fuel prices slashed by supermarkets in Coventry and Warwickshire

Motorists have been given a much-needed boost to the new year after supermarkets across Coventry and Warwickshire slashed the price of forecourt fuel.

Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s are reducing their petrol and diesel by 2p a litre from today, while Tesco’s similar 2p-a-litre cut has already taken effect.

The reductions mean Asda customers will pay no more than 105.7p a litre for petrol, with diesel at 112.7p a litre.

It is Asda’s 14th fuel cut since the end of September, with 21p a litre coming off its petrol price in total and 17p a litre off its diesel.

For Morrisons and Sainsbury’s it is the seventh cut since the beginning of December.

Cheapest pump prices across the region include Coventry’s Asda petrol stations in London Road and Brade Drive, which have seen unleaded fall to £105.7p a litre, with diesel currently at £112.7p a litre.

Also, Tesco in Leicester Street, Bedworth, and Tesco in Clifford Bridge Road, Walsgrave, were among the cheapest - according to the latest figures.

I often see taxi drivers drive away from BP stations without paying, how does that work then?

Perhaps they have accounts? - I used to have an account with PMG in Birmingham. I'd fill up as and when, the amount due was settled monthly. I did usually have to sign though.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I'm guessing they get a discount on the price too, to stop them filling up at Tesco or Morrisons?

Diesel cheaper than petrol after supermarkets cut prices

The price of diesel has fallen below petrol at some supermarkets for the first time in more than a decade, after the big chains announced price cuts.

Supermarket Morrisons cut the price of diesel by up to 2p per litre, and Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's followed the move with their own price cuts.

The last time diesel was cheaper than petrol was 2001, according to analysis by Experian Catalyst.

Morrisons said lower wholesale diesel costs meant it could pass on savings.

Mark Todd, petrol director for Morrisons, said: "This is a milestone in motoring and many younger drivers won't remember the last time that diesel prices were lower than unleaded."

Pump prices are influenced by factors including the distance from oil terminals and refineries, so not all diesel prices will be lower than petrol, the supermarkets said.

It's taken them long enough to do this. Diesel has been cheaper than Petrol for quite a while wholesale.
